The hardest part of eating out in Lisbon is choosing from among the fantastic options… but, never fear: Deb and Dieter’s Restaurant Recommendations make it easier. They’ve done the “hard work” of finding the best places to eat around the city–just for you!
The restaurant recommendations below are organized by category, then within category by price. Each restaurant also has a colored-coded marker on the above map. (Click on a marker to see the name, rating and highlights for places near you.)
The categories of cuisine are Portuguese/European (green markers), Brasilian (orange markers), Asian (blue markers), African (red markers), Fusion (yellow markers) and Other (purple markers).
Prices are listed for an average entree, as well as for a 2 person meal (without drinks and without tip).
We hope this helps you find the perfect place to eat… Bom apetite!
Portuguese/European
Goethe Café
German Embassy, Campo Mártires da Pátria 37
We give it: 5*
Price per entree: < 15€; Aprox. < 30€ for 2pax
Why you should go: Hidden gem! Summer only dining in this jungle-like garden cafe.
Enter through glass doors of the Goethe Institute, step down and then exit left into gardens. A kiosk serves lunch salads, plus a soup and hot meal of the day at outdoor-only tables scattered around immense plantings. Fountains gurgle while Portuguese neighbors, German expats, and local medical students relax in this unexpected oasis in the heart of the city.
O Chefe e o Mar
Rua Convento da Encarnacao, 1
We give it: 4*
Price per entree: 15 – 30€; Aprox. 30 – 50€ for 2pax
Why you should go: Very close to all Visiting Portugal homes. Great quality and service. Try the crispy tentacles (octopus)! Sister restaurant to Solar 31, just around the corner, which has a great fish selection.
Bica do Sapato
Av. Infante D. Henrique, Armazém B Cais da Pedra a Sta Apolónia
We give it: 4*
Price per entree: 15 – 30€; Aprox. 50 – 70€ for 2pax
Why you should go: Located across street from St Apolónia train station. Perfect esplanada for a sunny evening, right on the river, with very few pedestrians around to block the expansive water view.
Upscale vibe, attentive service, good food, good wine… and the appetizers come with excellent dinner salads. The sushi menu is decent, also.
Fixed price menu for two, plus our drinks, was €70 in May2019. Dinners are healthy-seque interpretations of popular Portuguese and European dishes. In short, an outstanding evening!
(Also rumored to have excellent Sunday brunch.)

Why you should go: Great tapas place. Amazing food and excellent selection of wine, cocktails and beers. Sophisticated atmosphere.
